Look for those smaller waterways to open back up again slowly like thru the end of this week or weekend. Neither of them had ever been on Lake Ontario. Look for some hook-ups by covering that different water and putting in a few hours. Without any persistent cold or snow or ice hanging in, these precipitation events are going to keep water color on the stained side. In the Niagara River, there are some salmon still swimming around the lower river if you want to work for them, both from shore and from boat. Sorry it took so long! Reports of good King and some trout action at Burt 18 Mile Creek. Releases may change due to weather and other conditions. Slightly lower flows will likely reveal more browns then thought when the water was higher. We are living and experiencing all the fishing action directly or thru trusted reports of other die hard anglers as it happens. The hope is this cold weather will be a good thing for later winter and spring steelhead action. Cover lots of water and get the drift down and slow and you could find a chromer! Look for drop back fish to be living there for now, with the other most productive spots being right at the dam or overflow channel pool. To the east, like at Sandy Creek, the higher Canal bolstered flows have made for better migration conditions with pods of salmon bolting from the estuary holding water and spreading upstream, along with a few browns mixed in.. Second season trout action now with light fishing pressure and still reasonable weather with all kinds of water to fish seems like the name of the game right now! Apr 29 winds are forecasted light and prevailing westerly. Mexico Bay has seen an invasion of salmon. All the trib flows are on the rise and going off color. Mixed sizes today with a couple in the 10 lb range and a couple around 28 lbs, most were in the 15 to 18 lbs. Capt. Any new precipitation could likewise bring those flows back up and dirty. Theres probably still some old Orleans Outdoor content out there on the web and Goggle. Its been pretty warm, and the near term forecast thru this week is continued warm with highs pushing the 80s F. Yes the area has been getting some precipitation lately, but no single rain event (yet) has been enough to move fish upstream. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. That sounds like a receipe for fresh fish migrations in all the waterways and the chance for brown trout and steelhead hook ups! No quick start to the salmon action yet. Well have to wait and see how much flows will change but it should bring flows up high but not blown. Think something like flows going from low to not so low. All weigh-ins will be at the Black North Inn by 3 PM. Hearing of legit salmon bites and even a few browns too in fast water areas on the Oak. Water temps for now are already in the the high 30sF on the Oak and probably going higher with the forecasted warmup thru the end of this week. Other area smaller tribs like Johnson and Marsh have lower flows so look for scattered numbers of upstream fish. Just prior to the lowering of flows, guys reported steelhead hook ups at the dam and overflow pools and scattered downstream thru the fast water gravel stretches for spawning fish. Anglers might consider re-releasing those fish in the turbine channel. One guy catches a fish, another guy quick runs the fish over to the turbine channel cradled in a net. Capt. Egg patterns work best to generate strikes. Deep and slow drifts and swings are rewarded with hard fighting fresh steelhead.
